17: RONNIE
Karl slept like the rocks in his head.
Seriously. If somebody dumped kitty litter down a running garbage disposal, it would have made less noise.
Ronnie scrubbed his hands down his face.
The foam pad mattress under his sleeping bag cushioned Ronnieâs back against the uneven groundâbut who could sleep with all the racket Karl was making?
Stan had to have noise-canceling headphones.
Maybe they all did.
Or maybe it was his extra-sensitive hearing. This wasnât the first time a loud noise had kept him up when everyone else had been able to ignore it.
Sleep wasnât happening.
Ronnie rolled out of his sleeping bag and struggled to his feet, slipping into his unlaced tennis shoes. If he couldnât sleep, he might as well enjoy the evening. His tent was niceânicer than the house heâd grown up in, since it didnât leak and he had his own roomâbut it didnât provide much of a view.
He unzipped the flap and stuck his head out into the cool night air. Overhead, millions of stars twinkled against the black sky. The lights from the Golden Gate Bridge sparkled on the rough waters of the bay as the city of San Francisco turned the horizon into an inferno of light.
The embers from the fire had burned down to a level that he could approach without feeling Sora cringe.
It had been the strangest sensation heâd felt in recent memory. Like something inside himself shrank and shivered and panicked when he stepped too close to the fire. Almost like a voice in the back of his mind writhed in disgust, like a cat hissing at a threat.
That was new.
Confronted with the sensation of a million needles stabbing into his arms and face and chestâanywhere the heat from the fire touched himâheâd retreated from the flames.
And Ryan had experienced something similar?
Yeah, it would have been helpful if Korin had offered them a little bit more information on exactly how the armors would affect them. Not that Ronnie harbored a childhood desire to be a firefighter.
Would have been nice if Korin had warned me. Oh, by the way, getting too close to a fire will make you feel like youâre going to lose your lunch. Just FYI.
And what about Ryan? What if Ryan had wanted to be a wilderness guide? Or go explore Antarctica or Greenland or something? Not that he would, but if Kazan hated cold as much as Sora hated fire, Ryan would be just as stuck as Ronnie.
Korin should have warned both of them.
Here, tiny human boy. A technologically advanced samurai armor made in an alien dimension allows you to do impossible things but will prevent you from drinking hot tea for the rest of your life. Tough break.
Stupid.
Ronnie cracked his neck and moved closer to the fire, where a bulky shape sat in a camp chair. Ryan? Heâd only walked a few steps before he spotted the light-colored hair.
Sam.
Maybe I should go back to bed.
Too late. Sam had spotted him.
Oh well.
Ronnie approached the campfire and sat astride a log with a yawn.
